Mombasa Suburbs

Other two suburbs namely mwembe tayari and Majengo are just as much surbubs as they are business centres. They are in the central business district.

Tudor to the north is an affluent residential area that houses many of the city working population. Located on the Tudor creek, this residential area is charecterised with gated private houses, well tarmacked streets, clean surrounding, few primary schools and secondary schools, as well as a number of religious establishments as is common with residential areas. Tudor residential area is also home to a few higher education establishments, namely Mombasa Polytechnic University and Jomo Kenyatta University mombasa Campus.

To the East is the Kizingo area, just close to mombasa's old town neighbourhood. Old town is Mombasa's oldest and first town. It was first settled by the arabians who set up administration from the area. It is from this neighbourhood that Mombasa operated its  first port. Old town is home to Fort Jesus and the country's first port harbour, which is still used to date by firshemen. The small town is also home to some of the oldest houses in Mombasa built in arabic achitecture. Also of note is the population charecteristics of this neighbourhood, whose people are mainly swahili and so is the laungage.  Very close to the town centre, old town can be accessed from Kizingo area or from the town centre itself, whose entrace is the Market popularly known as "Marikiti" a direct swahili translation of its english synoym.

Kizingo area, the most affluent neighbourhood in Mombasa island is on a cliff overlooking the indian ocean, just like the old town and tudor. Kizingo area is home to the country's state house in Mombasa and a number of administration blocks namely, the municipal offices, the law courts  and the provincial administration offices. In this residential are to be found a number of business people residing in their private homes. A number of the best schools in Mombasa are also found here and of note the Aga Khan Academy, touted as the best school in the whole of East Africa. An international school, Aga Khan Academy school structure is magnificent piece of architecture not to mention the best resourced school center. Close by are other international schools. Neighbouring the state house, the urban police unit, the law courts, the provincial administration offices, the central bank as well as other banks, a number of embassies and other international schools, Kizingo area also has a nearby shopping centre,  a supermarket chain common in Kenya, The Nakumatt Supermarket, located in between Kizingo and Ganjoni area.

Ganjoni area, the neighborhood on south of Mombasa island, is close to the port of Mombasa as it is close to Likoni channel. The closest neighbourhood to the central business district of Mombasa, Ganjoni houses more middle level working population of the town. It is characterised by decent average gated homes, a number of primary schools, apartments for rent and a number of liquor stores to while the time away after a long day at work.

Shimanzi is a small residential area in a big industrial area in Mombasa. Located on the west of Mombasa Island, shimanzi has is less a residential area and more an industrial area. It is characterised by rail roads, muddy roads with heavy moving vehicles and fenced or walled residenntial houses. Makupa is very close to Shimanzi. However, this is purely a residential area with few small industries. The residential area is mainly for the middle level working population of the industries in Shimanzi and other parts of the town. A well known residential area is the High level Estate. A Kenya Ports Authority estate, High level Estate is a very good estate meant for the workers of the Harbour's company workers.

Mwembe Tayari is a business commercial centre popular for its bus stations that ensure transport of people and goods in and out of Mombasa town. As is popular with traveling centres, Mwembe Tayari has uncountable dining joints and many other merchant shops. Mwembe tayari is a busy small town with the fewest residential houses and a number of lodges and apartments. Xlose to Mwembe Tayari is the Majengo neighbourhood. Majengo is a small residential area that has a few of the working population of Mombasa. The population in this area is mainly of swahili, and arab origin
